No doubt (is there?) that an artist’s mind, that’s to say the creative mind, works in mysterious ways. So just imagine how much more twisted are the avenues entertained by their subconscious! Israeli-born photographer Ronen Goldman is not only happy to open that can of worms, he’s also actualizing his dreams through his art. The Surrealistic Pillow Project, which he’s regularly updating on Facebook, consists of photos he’s taken on the heels of his dreams, and that he’s digitally manipulated to really make the fantasy (or surrealist) frame pop.

There’s nothing soporific about Goldman’s Pillow Project, on the contrary, it’s positively alive and kicking. Also, it seems to be in constant battle with some slew of intruders or another. Freud would have a field day – I’ll only venture the guess that these sleepisodes might not be all about beauty and cuddles to begin with. The creepiness levels surely go up when myriads of hands or apples etc. get conjured up out of nowhere in an unconscious state.

But the ever-growing collection of dream-prints is also teeming with optical illusions, and underlying meaning, and riveting imagery, everything suspended in midair, imponderable in more ways than one…

Whether it’s fruit, fish, hands, cards, lizards, cameras or guitars, the common thread in his photos, and dreamscapes, is a surrealism-via-swarm scenario. We can expect even more to be added in the Surrealistic Pillow Facebook album, as long as oddities keep presenting themselves in his sleep – and the signs, thankfully, are pointing to an endless raging mess of thoughts inside Goldman’s noggin.
